NEWS OF THE WEEK

LOLA Colombia on Petro’s Tax Reform

Written by Alejandra Moreno Giraldo,
LOLA Medellin, Colombia leader

On November 3rd, Colombian President Petro Urrego approved a tax reform that he claims will ‘help’ Colombian citizens but in reality will do the opposite. The Colombian Congress approved a new tax reform in November. Petro’s government says that increasing taxes was essential in order to improve the quality of life in the country. However, this duty reform will only decrease business creation in the long run.

This reform imposes higher taxes on plastics, sugar, businesses, and dividends. The majority of the legislative branch publicly defended the reform, saying that it will only affect the rich.

The sad reality is that those considered ‘rich’ in the country only make an average income of 831 USD per month. This tax reform will only lead to more hunger, malnourishment, and poverty for its citizens.

What’s more, the reform will make it harder for women in the country to get quality jobs. In September, women’s unemployment rate was 12.9%, while men’s was 8.0%.

In response to these events, LOLA Colombia has focused on instituting courses and conferences that work to increase soft skills of members for Colombia’s highly competitive job market. We at LOLA Colombia refuse  to allow any government to destroy our lives, families, and future. We are taking matters into our hands and improving our future.

Our advice to fellow Colombian citizens is to diversify in currency and industry. As for LOLA, we will keep a close eye on any ongoing political, legal, and economic changes, that might affect the freedom of Colombians and continue to help the women around us.
