LOLA Guatemala City, Guatemala
Give Guatemalans Access to Vote

It is a complex process to vote in the country in Guatemala. Of 18 million people, only 3 million are eligible to vote. The political system is designed to make sure few people vote but LOLA Guatemala is partnering with like-minded organizations in order to change that. In the first session of the program: Political Participation for Women, leaders were able to educate attendees on how to vote and participate in the upcoming election with 48 attendees who joined. The course aims to train the participants in three main topics: 1) To provide Guatemalan women with basic information about the importance of civic participation. 2) Teach them how the electoral process takes place in Guatemala and the steps required to participate. 3) To educate them in various ways beyond voting to impact Guatemalan society from their communities.

LOLA Quito, Ecuador
LOLA Ecuador Working With Congress

LOLA Ecuador has started an initiative in their country in which they will act as advisors to legislators by commenting and proposing bills related to women’s rights and empowerment. In early August, the Chapter will have a working meeting with members of Congress and hope to see results soon. The first event launching this initiative took place in July where leaders established a work agenda for the next month to analyze the bill and outline an alternative proposal. They also launched a new initiative in order to become a public opinion reference with an alternative perspective toward feminism and liberty, proposals, and solutions to Congress. Currently, there are five bills in Congress related to women’s rights, and LOLA Ecuador decided to focus on the bill on menstrual health, which has no sustainable grounds.

LOLA Mendoza, Argentina
The Sex Education Crisis in Argentina

In Argentina, sex education classes were nonexistent until 2019 when Congress approved the ESI (Educaccion Sexual Integral) law. Because of this gap in information, women 20 years old and above do not have a lot of information about their health and sexuality. As a result, sexually transmitted illnesses and teen pregnancies increased substantially. LOLA Argentina is here to help women gain the knowledge they need to manage their own sexual health by inviting a women’s health specialist, Tatiana Barroso. The class helped attendees gain the information and skills they need to make the best decisions for themselves about sex and relationships.
