Each month we celebrate the voices of our LOLAs making noise around the world, and April was a standout.

We counted 15 media mentions this month spanning Brazil, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, covering a wide range of topics and showcasing just how much our community has to say.

And beyond the articles, April brought something new: the launch of Sin Permiso, a brand-new podcast from our Latin American team. For the very first episode, they welcomed our president Nena Whitfield, a conversation that set exactly the right tone for everything the podcast stands for.

Here’s to an amazing month for all LOLA voices. 🎙

Featured Appearances

Sin Permiso Podcast – Episode 1 (ENGLISH)
LOLA Latin America x Nena Whitfield

In the premiere episode of Sin Permiso, LOLA’s Latin American team sits down with organization president Nena Whitfield to talk about how this global movement of women for liberty came to be, what it means to challenge the monopoly of discourse, and whether there’s a real price to pay for speaking the truth. A conversation about intellectual freedom, political narratives, and why none of this is as simple as it should be.

The graduate “success tax” is killing aspiration (ENGLISH)
Samiksha Bhattacharjee – LOLA London, United Kingdom

Our LOLA Samiksha turned down a paid degree apprenticeship at a top investment bank after advisers pushed her toward traditional university. Now, watching the government freeze the student loan repayment threshold through 2030, she’s doing the math and regretting it. She argues the system isn’t really a loan at all. It’s a graduate success tax, one that stacks on top of income tax and National Insurance to eat away at every extra pound a young worker earns.

Her fix isn’t debt cancellation. It’s market discipline. Samiksha wants Income Share Agreements, where universities fund degrees in exchange for a share of future earnings, so that low-value courses can’t survive on guaranteed government loans. She also wants Training Vouchers to replace the Apprenticeship Levy, giving young people the freedom to take their funding to a university or an employer. The problem, she says, isn’t that too many people went to university. It’s that the price signal is broken, and until universities have real skin in the game, nothing changes.

The hidden flaws of state intervention in education (PORTUGUESE)
Letícia Barros –  President, LOLA Brazil

The article argues that state intervention in education produces unintended negative consequences by replacing competition, incentives, and accountability with centralized control. Excessive regulation and public management reduce efficiency, innovation, and quality while limiting individual choice and institutional autonomy.

Rather than improving outcomes, this model creates systemic distortions that hinder educational performance, reinforcing the case that government solutions often worsen the very problems they set out to fix.
