FREEDOM AND SECURITY: CAN WE HAVE BOTH?
LOLA Maputo hosted an event to foster a comprehensive debate on the relationship between freedom and security in contemporary contexts. The discussion focused on balancing both values and identifying potential challenges and solutions. Key political issues highlighted included state repression, intimidation, and the violation of fundamental rights. On the economic front, participants addressed poverty compounded by high taxes on necessities, which hinder access to food and increase malnutrition rates. Corruption, a major social issue, was also discussed, with emphasis on how it cripples public and private institutions, leaving millions of Mozambicans in extreme poverty.
The participants agreed that achieving security and freedom is possible but requires active involvement from the youth and society. They stressed that without citizens reclaiming control of the state, unjust government policies would continue to repress fundamental freedoms in the name of security.
The event featured insightful contributions from several speakers: Lázaro Mabunda, an investigative journalist; Gracious Phiri, Regional Coordinator of LOLA Africa; and Palmira Revula, Chapter Leader of LOLA Mozambique and Coordinator of the Transformational Leadership Academy. Palmira also serves as Provincial Coordinator for the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights. Their insights provided valuable perspectives on how communities can confront these challenges and advocate for sustainable solutions.

They noted that many residents are so preoccupied with earning enough money to cover these taxes that they lack the time or energy to challenge the system.
