Ladies of Liberty Alliance – Burundi, Africa

Meet the incredible women spreading liberty across Burundi.

About LOLA – Burundi

The Burundi Ladies of Liberty Alliance Chapter was founded by an ambitious young woman named Wakana Monia who was introduced to LOLA by a friend. After learning of LOLA’s mission, Wakana quickly founded the chapter in hope of recruiting more women to the ideas of liberty, something that she explains is desperately needed in Central Africa. In Burundi at least 40% of women experienced some form of gender-based violence. Since their founding in late July 2018, the Burundi chapter of the Ladies of Liberty Alliance has grown from just one woman to over 15 dedicated ladies.

The Beginning…

For LOLA – Burundi’s first event, ladies gathered in Bujumbura, the capital city and main port of Burundi. The meeting was a huge success and a packed house of over 15 ladies gathered to learn more about LOLA. They learned about LOLA’s mission to educate and empower female Ladies of Liberty, discussed ways to best reach their community, and made a toast to the future of the movement in Burundi. The event was a great way to network and meet like-minded women.

Burundi Chapter Leader, Wakana, says her goal is “to create an empowered network of Burundian libertarian leaders who will actively engage in public discourse and show empathy to those who are injured by the government of Burundi. This is in order to attract political and social changes to ensure opportunities for every individual and family.”

Like many LOLA chapters, LOLA Burundi is composed of both women that have been involved in the liberty movement for years, and women who are new to the philosophy of libertarianism. Ladies of Liberty in Burundi continues to educate and empower new women in their area.

“LOLA is important for many Burundian women because it provides an opportunity for women that do not have the right to debate publicly because of the culture that does not give women a voice in the economic, political, and social scenes. It also provides access to a family of libertarian women to learn new ideas that can help them identify challenges and propose solutions to their desire for a free and fair future. LOLA continues to change the lives of these women by helping them become defenders of social change in their local community.”
