February LOLA of the Month

Meet Ingrid!

The Ladies of Liberty Alliance would like to congratulate Ingrid Elisabeth Santos on being named the February 2019 LOLA of the Month! Ingrid is chapter leader of LOLA – Santa Catarina, Brazil. She was chosen for this honor for her unwavering dedication to supporting LOLA’s mission to create an empowered network of libertarian women throughout Brazil!

Ingrid’s Journey with LOLA

Since beginning the LOLA – Santa Catarina chapter in 2018, Ingrid chapter has grown the chapter from a few passionate Ladies of Liberty to one of the most active LOLA chapters dedicated to spreading libertarian philosophy both within Santa Catarina and across Brazil. This is no small task for ladies in Santa Catarina – a Brazilian state with a complicated history of little to no female leadership.

We asked Ingrid about her experiences in LOLA thus far. Here’s what she had to say!

How did your involvement with LOLA begin?
I learned about LOLA through LOLA’s Brazilian Chapters Director, Cecilia Lopes. I watched LOLA grow rapidly in Brazil and realized the importance of this organization in my country. That’s when I decided to be part of it!

What is your favorite part of your role with LOLA?
My favorite part is being able to overcome obstacles. Every event we host comes with some push-back and obstacles. When we overcome it’s an amazing and indescribable feeling. Realizing that we have the necessary skills and that these skills help other women discover liberty is a wonderful feeling. I love being an activist for freedom and even more so to be able to do activism with so many wonderful women I met because of this movement.

Why is LOLA important to you and women in Santa Catarina?
LOLA is important to me because it plays a very important role in the inclusion and promotion of libertarian women. The environment created by this organization allows us to demystify the belief that there are no women that believe in liberty. Female libertarians exist and LOLA has given us a platform that was lacking and helps us be visible.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of during your time at LOLA so far?
Bringing a LOLA chapter to Santa Catarina was one of, if not the greatest, challenge I faced. The prospect was really negative at first because I was new to the state and did not know many libertarian people, let alone female libertarians. But I’ve found them and today our chapter exceeds expectations at each meeting. Our last event on Homeschooling vs. State Education was a success! In the same event we gave visibility to libertarian ideas, to the family institution and, of course, to women!

How do you balance being a LOLA chapter leader with other roles in your daily life?
I study economics at the State University of the State of Santa Catarina and here I founded the Group of Studies and Debates Frédéric Bastiat. I am also a local coordinator with SFLB (Students For Liberty Brazil). As a LOLA chapter leader, I count on the support of friends, some who have a history in activism, and others who have become involved in activism through LOLA. They help me with the organization and ideas for new events.

I would like to thank and recognize the efforts of Carolina Abdala and Isadora Calônico, members who were vital for the chapter to have space to meet, and all the other members of LOLA in the state of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis (the capital), and Criciúma! Our chapter would not be so active without their hard work!
